John E. Leao II Memorial Scholarship
John E. Leao II began Canyon High School as a freshman in 1993 and graduated four years later in June, 1997. John received a $1,000 Scholarship from Universal Technical Institute for the Automotive Technology Program. The scholarship was presented to John on June 5, 1997 at the Awards ceremony at Canyon High School.
John went to Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He enrolled in a 15-month program in September, 1997 and received his degree in December, 1998. While there he completed the Certified Automotive and Diesel Technology program and in recognition of the achievement he received an Associates of Occupational Studies Degree.
John began his career working for seven years for MazTec in Valencia, CA. He was the Master Certified Mechanic for the shop. From MazTec he opened up his first shop named, Creekside Auto Repair Service. He later went on to work for Teague, learning the ins and outs of high-powered boat engines. In May, 2009 John opened up his sole proprietor shop named JohnE’s Auto on Ruether Avenue in Canyon Country, His Dad, Mom and Brother all pitched in to finance the purchase of lifts and equipment.
It did not take long to build a customer base. John prided himself as an honest mechanic and the word soon spread. His shop was full six days a week with customers’ cars. After two and a half years he spoke with his landlord regarding future expansion plans and he was ready to expand into a second rental area within the same
location. He was on his way and it was a thrill to watch him perform on all the engine and automotive repairs.
Unfortunately he tragically passed away on August 5, 2011 as a result of injuries received in a motorcycle crash at the dunes at Pismo Beach.
We, his family, are thrilled to be able to share his passion for the mechanical world and to be able to provide this Scholarship. presented to students who share the same passion for automotive mechanics as our son did.
We wish you every continued success.
